Ms. Allison Byerly
Free-spirited and free-thinking parents, being born and raised on the beach in So Cal, and coming of age with the counterculture of the 1960’s infused me with an open mind, a liberal view of life, a love of nature and a passion for all things art.

I graduated from Long Beach Wilson High School and attended Long Beach State, majoring in art. Two decades later I returned to college to earn a minor in math and a teaching credential at CSUDH. I have been lucky enough to have traveled a great deal in North Africa and Europe, which has allowed me to experience first hand other cultures and forms of creative expression.

My working life began with a small stained-glass business, followed by twelve years as a graphic artist with various defense/intelligence groups. I began teaching in 1995; art at Long Beach Jordan, biology at Long Beach Wilson, math at Wilmington and Peary Middle Schools, and finally to my home here at Heritage High.

I have two children, Lauren and Zachary. My daughter (married to a university professor) is executive assistant to the director of an international non-profit organization, and my son is busy cultivating veggies and honing his culinary skills.

Animals of all kinds have been a big part of my life. Over the years my pets have included various small birds, parrots, snakes, lizards, mice and rats, chinchillas and guinea pigs. I currently share my home with five dogs and four cats.

Art has always played an important role in my life, whether painting faux finishes on the walls in my home, constructing with fiber, designing landscapes, or creating clothing. The endless variety of art media provides an unlimited number of ways to express one’s self, though my current favorites are ceramics, fiber and textile arts.

We are very excited about our art program at Heritage. I am looking forward to helping each of our students discover their creative side and develop their own unique avenues of self-expression.
